Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (CM4): A Powerful Solution for Industrial IoT Applications

The Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (CM4) is the fourth generation of compute modules launched by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, designed to provide robust computing power for industrial IoT applications. Below is a detailed overview of the CM4:

 

1. Hardware Specifications:

 

- CPU: The CM4 Sensing is equipped with a 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A72 1.5GHz CPU, delivering powerful processing capabilities.

- Memory and Storage: The system can be configured with 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB of RAM and 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB of eMMC storage, with support for SD card boot.

- Communication Interfaces: It includes a 4G/LTE module, 4 RS485 ports, 1 RS232 port, 1 CAN bus, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port (with PoE functionality), 1 10/100M Ethernet port, certified 2.4/5.8GHz dual-band WiFi, and Bluetooth with external antenna support.

- Display Interfaces: The DSI interface is fully compatible with the Raspberry Pi 4B, supporting the official Raspberry Pi 7-inch touchscreen display. A standard HDMI interface can output 4K video.

- Other Interfaces: There are 2 USB 2.0 ports and 1 Micro USB 2.0 port, the latter used for updating the system image. It also features a Mini PCIe interface, supporting standard PCIe Gen2 devices.

 

2. Expansion Capabilities:

 

- Expansion: The CM4 offers extensive expansion capabilities. The Mini-PCIe slot provides a PCIe 1x Gen2 interface for expansion. In addition to supporting the standard 40-pin expansion interface, it offers 2 4-pin USB interfaces for internal case expansion and 1 TTL-level RS232 interface.

- 4G Module: Users can opt for the Quectel EC20 full-network 4G module, connecting to the motherboard via this interface to achieve 4G network communication.

 

3. Power and Protection:

 

- Power Supply: The CM4 supports a wide range of power inputs, with voltage ranges of 8~36V or 12~18V (depending on the model).

- ESD Protection: Key interfaces are protected against Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) to ensure device stability and reliability.

 

4. Application Scenarios:

 

The CM4 is suitable for various industrial IoT scenarios, such as data acquisition, remote control, and automated production lines. Its powerful communication capabilities and expandability can meet the diverse requirements of industrial settings.
