Comparing Surface Acoustic Wave and Resistive Touch Chips: Principles and Applications
From:www.eurotech-ic.com
Date:2024-05-09

Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) touch chips and resistive touch chips exhibit significant differences in principle, characteristics, and application scenarios.

SAW touch chips primarily utilize the propagation principle of surface acoustic waves to sense user touch operations. The basic principle involves emitting ultrasonic waves through ultrasonic sensors and transmitters on the touch panel. When a user touches the screen, the touch point causes ultrasonic wave reflection, which is detected by the ultrasonic sensor and converted into an electrical signal output. The advantages of SAW touch chips include high sensitivity, good durability, and strong waterproof and dustproof capabilities, making them particularly suitable for outdoor environments.

On the other hand, resistive touch chips utilize the principle of resistance variation to sense user touch operations. The screen of a resistive touch screen consists of multiple layers of composite films, including a layer of glass or organic glass as the base layer, with a transparent conductive layer (ITO film) coated on the surface. When a finger touches the screen, the two layers of ITO come into contact, causing a change in resistance. The controller calculates the coordinates of the contact point based on the detected resistance change and performs corresponding operations. The drawback of resistive touch screens is that they can only achieve single-point touch, and the surface ITO layer may develop small cracks or deformations over time due to frequent touch, leading to a limited lifespan.

In conclusion, SAW touch chips and resistive touch chips differ in principle, characteristics, and application scenarios. SAW touch chips are suitable for touch screens, especially in outdoor environments, due to their high sensitivity, durability, and waterproof and dustproof capabilities. On the other hand, resistive touch chips, with their simple structure and cost-effectiveness, still find application in certain specific scenarios.
