What’re the Types and Functions of Resistors in Electronic Circuits?

Resistors are fundamental components in electronic circuits, used to limit the magnitude of current flowing through the circuit. There are various types of resistors, each with specific purposes. Here are some primary types of resistors:

1. Wirewound Resistors: These resistors are made by winding resistive wire around an insulating substrate. Depending on their application and performance, wirewound resistors can be categorized into general-purpose, precision, high-power, and high-frequency wirewound resistors.

 

2. Thin Film Resistors: Thin film resistors are made by depositing a layer of resistive film on an insulating substrate. Depending on the material of the resistive film, thin film resistors can be further classified into carbon film, synthetic carbon film, metal film, metal oxide film, chemical deposition film, glass glaze film, and metal nitride film resistors.

 

3. Solid Resistors: Solid resistors primarily consist of a resistor body (substrate) and leadouts. The resistor body is mostly composed of carbon particles or inorganic fillers mixed with organic binders. Solid resistors include inorganic synthetic solid carbon resistors and organic synthetic solid carbon resistors.

 

4. Sensing Resistors: Sensing resistors are components sensitive to certain physical quantities, with their resistance values changing accordingly. Sensing resistors mainly include varistors, thermistors, photoresistors, force-sensitive resistors, gas-sensitive resistors, and humidity-sensitive resistors.

 

Additionally, resistors can be categorized as fixed resistors and variable resistors based on whether their resistance values can be adjusted. The resistance value of fixed resistors is constant, while that of variable resistors can be altered by adjusting their structure.

Resistors in circuits typically act to divide voltage and current, and they can limit the magnitude of current flowing through the branches to which they are connected. A key physical characteristic of resistors is their conversion of electrical energy into heat energy, making them dissipative components. The performance and quality of resistors are crucial for the proper functioning of electronic devices, making the correct selection and usage of resistors essential for circuit designers.
