What are the three types of lighting methods for LCD displays? There are transmissive, semi-transmissive and reflective types. What are the uses of these lighting methods?
1. Transmissive LCD
The light emitted by the backlight (which can be divided into side-mounted and bottom-mounted) is used for irradiation and is displayed through the LCD screen and color filters. The bottom-mounted backlight will increase the weight and thickness of the display screen. It is basically not used for portable devices such as mobile phones, but is mostly used for LCD TVs, computer monitors and other large display devices that require high brightness and require easy power supply.
2. Semi-transmissive LCD display
It has both transmissive and reflective structural features, and can save power consumption by using reflection under external light during the day. Backlight lighting should be used indoors and at night, and is most suitable for portable devices. Currently, most color portable devices such as color mobile phones use semi-transmissive type.
3. Reflective LCD
Because external light, such as sunlight during the day and indoor electric lights, illuminates the surface of the display (and is reflected in the LCD screen). The reflected light is displayed through the LCD screen and color filters. It does not consume the power of the backlight and is light in weight. It is often used in calculators, clocks, etc.
In reflective LCD displays, the pixel electrodes that serve as light reflectors are mostly made of metal films such as aluminum and silver. The incident light entering the reflective LCD display is reflected by the internal pixel electrodes and then emitted outward through the liquid crystal layer. . Using this structure, in order to increase the reflected light as much as possible and improve the viewing angle, etc., it is necessary to form unevenness on the surface of the pixel electrode. In addition, installing a light diffusion film on top of the liquid crystal layer requires efforts to improve performance.
